LEC Fun Ride 09
MARCH 21, 2009
SECOND ANNUAL SPRING FUN RIDE HELD
Louisiana Equine Council (LEC) Second Annual Fun Ride will be held on March 21, 2009 at Cane Camp in Kisatchie National Forest. Everyone is welcome, you do not have to be a member of LEC, but we would love for you to learn what we are about. This is an organization that represents all horse owners in Louisiana and can provide a valuable framework for them to accomplish something meaningful and positive for the horse industry whatever your breed or forte.
As a member of LEC the cost is $15.00 per adult rider, $10.00 for children twelve and under. If you are NOT a member of LEC cost is $20.00 per adult rider. The charge includes lunch and the $5.00 ride out fee for the Sandstone Trail. If camping overnight there is a $3.00 camping fee, which you will deposit at the site. There is no day use fee.
Cane Camp is located in the Kisatchie Ranger District; it is considered the “Crown Jewel” of the 600,000-acre Kisatchie National Forest. Variations in topography range from level land to very steep bluffs affording breathtaking views. There will be two guided rides beginning at 9:30 on Saturday morning. One group of quarter horses and the other gaited horses; both trails will be forest, hilly and have a water crossing or two.
Cane Camp is a primitive horse camp with running water, improved restrooms and poles to tie horses (bring your own rope to make a highline) There are no R.V. hookups, but they are available at camps nearby. Additional trailer day parking will be provided a few minutes down the road from Cane Camp if needed.
You can chow down on cowboy stew, coleslaw and dessert about 1:30, and then join in for games and an educational hour. If this isn’t enough, there will be a used tack sale going on where YOU can make some extra cash. Bring your unwanted items priced to sell and you keep 80% of your sell price, LEC retains 20% for their trails program. Or have a photo taken with your loved one (horse or spouse) for a reasonable price. If you so desire, you can voice your opinion during our open trails meeting about 4:00 p.m.
Cane Camp is located off the Longleaf Trail Scenic Byway, which is about five miles south of the Derry/Cloutierville exit on I-49. Go about 13 miles west from the entrance to Kisatchie, and Cane Camp is on the north side of the road. Or go about 27 miles north from Leesville off Hwy 117 (Kurthwood Hwy) right onto Longleaf Scenic Byway.
Come join LEC for the day or the weekend. Help make a difference for the future of the horse industry in Louisiana while making new friends and enjoying our forestland.
If you have a group coming please notify me so that I can pass it on to the cook! Hope to see you there. peggy_bianchi@yahoo.com
